Kara Peet MSW RSWTrauma Therapist

Therapy for what happened to you

Trauma therapy in Ontario — virtual, somatic, sensorimotor-informed.

I help trauma survivors live whole and connected lives. I provide trauma therapy to those who have experienced abuse, including rape and sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and the harm that happens inside families and relationships — abuse, shame, humiliation, the wounds you carry from where you grew up.

Trauma may impact your self-esteem, or create relationship issues, anxiety, alienation from the body, feelings of being disconnected from yourself and others.

I draw on somatic techniques (alongside regular talk therapy) to address the body’s role in trauma. Together, your body and emotions will become powerful allies in healing and creating lasting change.

Sessions are 50 minutes, for individuals 16+ in Ontario, online through a secure video platform.

Kara Peet, trauma therapist

Hi. I’m Kara.

Before private practice, I spent more than a decade in hospitals and community mental health — including years at a community hub serving survivors of gender-based violence, where I led a team of counsellors.

A central focus of my work has been supporting people impacted by trauma without the lens of pathology. That’s to say — there’s nothing wrong with you at all. Your ways of being in the world may have developed as a means of protection; in our work together, you will come to observe those strategies and actively choose whether they still serve you today.

I am a social worker, and social justice is a core tenet of my work. Wellness is as much about our individual experiences as it is about our intersecting experiences of class, race, ability, gender, and sexuality. After many years practicing in community, I deeply believe that therapy can be activist work on a small scale, holding the feminist ethic that the personal is the political. And healing can be a revolutionary act.

My experience has taught me that therapy is a space apart from life — a unique opportunity to encounter, understand, and grieve. It is equally a space for connection, expansion, and, quite often, play. People are often surprised at how fun and laughter-filled trauma therapy can be.

Fees & payment

My rate is $170 per 50-minute session. I have limited sliding-scale (reduced fee) spaces for clients who would otherwise be unable to access therapy.

Many private insurance plans cover psychotherapy provided by a Registered Social Worker. I offer direct billing for Green Shield Canada and the insurers on the TELUS eClaims network (including Manulife, Canada Life, Desjardins, and others). For other plans, you’ll receive a receipt by email after each session to submit yourself. Either way, it’s worth checking that your plan covers services by a “social worker” specifically before we begin.

I accept payment by Interac e-transfer or credit card.

I am also a registered provider with the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), which covers counselling for refugees and refugee claimants, and with the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program, which covers counselling for First Nations and Inuit clients. If you have IFHP or NIHB coverage, reach out and we’ll walk through the referral and approval steps together.

For military members, veterans & RCMP

I am a registered Veterans Affairs Canada provider, and I welcome military members, veterans, and RCMP members working through all kinds of service-related trauma. Sessions are billed directly to VAC: no cost to you, and no waitlist.

If you’ve carried this since your service, it doesn’t have to stay carried alone.
